Why Do We Need God: [Short Sermon]

  • Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
  • Matthew 6:33: “But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Today, I would like to talk about the question that we have all asked ourselves at one point in our lives: “Why do we need God?” It is a question that can be difficult to answer, especially when we are faced with the challenges and struggles of life. But I believe that the answer lies at the very core of our existence.

Let us begin by acknowledging that we were not created to live in isolation. From the very beginning, God created us to be in relationship with Him and with one another. We were created to love and be loved, to serve and be served, and to give and receive. In this sense, we need God because we need relationships. We need to be connected to the source of all love and goodness in the universe.

Why Do We Need God

But our need for God goes deeper than this. We need God because He is the foundation of our moral and ethical compass. Without God, there would be no basis for right and wrong, no way to discern what is just and fair, and what is good and true. We would be adrift in a world without a guiding light. We would be lost in a sea of moral relativism and unable to tell the difference between truth and lies, light and dark.

We need God because He provides us with a sense of purpose and meaning. Without God, life can seem meaningless and empty, a series of random events leading nowhere. But when we understand that we were created by God for a purpose, that we have been given gifts and talents to use for His glory, and that we have a role to play in His plan for the world, then life takes on a new sense of significance and purpose.

Moreover, we need God because He offers us hope. When we face trials and tribulations in life, it can be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. We can become overwhelmed by our circumstances, and feel like there is no way out. But when we turn to God, we find a source of hope that transcends our current situation. We find a God who promises to never leave us or forsake us, who promises to work all things together for our good, and who promises to bring us through the storms of life and into a place of peace and rest.

The most fundamental reason we require God is that we are incomplete without Him. We were created to be in a relationship with Him, to draw our life and strength from Him. Without God, we are like branches cut off from the tree of life, withering away in the wind. We need God to fill the void in our hearts, heal the brokenness within us, and give us the joy and peace that we crave.

In conclusion, dear brothers and sisters, we need God because we were created to be in a relationship with Him. We need Him to tell us what is right and wrong, to give us a sense of purpose and meaning, to give us hope when things are hard, and to make us whole as people. As the psalmist wrote, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God.” Let us turn to God with all our hearts, and allow Him to fill us with His love, grace, and truth. May God bless us all. Amen.
